GILL, COUTTS & CO. was established in Ponsonby in 1977 as a General Legal Practice based upon the fundamental values of excellence in the law and service to our clients. We continue to adhere to these values as we believe them to be an essential part of modern legal practice.

David L. Gill

LL.B

David graduated from the University of Auckland in 1964 with an LL.B. He began his legal career with Simpson Coates & Clapshaw before joining Meredith Connell in 1963. He became a partner of that firm in 1964.

Ian Coutts, Stella Lim and Lynda Cheeseman joined David
at Meredith Connell where Ian also became a partner.

In 1977 David, Ian and Stella formed the partnership of
Gill, Coutts & Co. and established the firm in Ponsonby.

CHRISTOPHER D. GILL

LL.B (Hons), M.Jur.

Christopher holds an LL.B. (Hons) and also a postgraduate Master of Jurisprudence both from the University of Auckland. Christopher became a partner of Gill, Coutts & Co. in 1998.

JONATHAN N. GILL

LL.B (Hons), M.Com.Law (Hons)

Jonathan holds an LL.B. (Hons) and also a postgraduate Master of Commercial Law with First Class Honours both from the University of Auckland.

He received the Senior Prize in Law when graduating with his LL.B. (Hons) and the prize for highest academic record when completing his Master of Commercial Law. Jonathan also received the Auckland District Law Society Prize for achieving first place in his bar examinations. Jonathan became a partner of Gill, Coutts & Co. in 2008.

ASSOCIATE

HARRY C. GILL

B.A./LL.B

Harry holds an LL.B and a B.A. majoring in history from the University of Auckland. He received a First in Course Award in LAWCOM 427 (Vendor and Purchaser) in 2020.

Harry graduated from Auckland University in 2021 and began working full time at Gill, Coutts & Co. in 2022.

LYNDA CHEESEMAN

NZILE

Lynda began her legal career with Meredith Connell working with David Gill, Ian Coutts & Stella Lim. When Gill, Coutts & Co. was established in 1977 Lynda joined our team.

Lynda is our firm’s registered Legal Executive. In 2005 she received the commendation on behalf of the New Zealand Law Society, the Auckland District Law Society and the Auckland Branch of the New Zealand Institute of Legal Executives for achieving first place in New Zealand for the Institute’s Property Law and Practice examination.

Lynda is also our firm’s accountant.
